Social Stories

• Anyone can create a Social Story.
• Print and personalize the Social Stories on this website or create your own (feel free to add pictures from the ____ tab).
• Include some personal information about the child to make the story his or her own.
• Choose one behavior or situation to focus on in one story.
• State facts about the situation.
• Provide ideas of child performance around the expected behavior.
• Focus on what the child should do in the situation.

• When a child is experiencing challenges with an activity, routine, event or situation at school, home or other environment
• When a child is learning a new skill
• When a child is unsure about an upcoming event
• When a child is having difficulty following expectations

• Focus on what the child should do in the situation

• Introduce only one Social Story at a time.
• It is very important to introduce a new social story when the child is calm and relaxed.
• Read it to the child in a one-on-one situation. It should be an enjoyable experience.
• A Social Story can be read up to a couple of times each day, with a planned reading before the activity or situation portrayed in the story.

Choose a Social Story from the word documents below that fits your need, then:

• Print and individualize by handwriting information on the lines provided.
• OR change or add wording by using your keyboard to delete/type.
• OR add photographs (adding a photo of the child is a great way to individualize) or clipart from your computer.

1. Click on the Social Story.
2. From the toolbar at the top of your screen choose insert, then picture.
3. From the menu that pops up, choose from file (for a photo from your computer) or clipart (for other pictures).
4. Find your desired picture and click insert.
5. To size this picture, double click on the picture and choose layout from the tabs at the top.
6. Choose in front of text and OK to freely move your picture around on the page.
7. Lastly, click on your picture and find a dot in one of the corners to drag the photograph to your desired size.
8. REMEMBER: Save your Social Story changes to your computer so you can access it in the future!
9. Note: If you are unable to add your own pictures, try saving the Social Story to your computer first and then opening it from the new location.
